Treatment for Ovarian Cancer Surgery is one of the most recommended ways of treating cancers. The type of surgery depends upon how widespread the cancer is when diagnosed, as well as the presumed type and grade of cancer. By surgery, it lessens pain or relieves pain brought by cancers. Surgery for ovarian cancer is usually performed by specialists in gynecologic oncology. There is an improved survival in surgery as long as there is an accurate staging of the cancer and a higher rate of aggressive surgical excision of tumor in the abdomen. In some instances, a removal of the ovary, fallopian tubes, or even the uterus may be needed.
As in many forms of cancer, chemotherapy is a prescribed treatment for patients with ovarian cancer. This is usually done for a period of time after surgery. Anti-cancer drugs such as Taxol and Paraplatin are administered intravenously. Some chemotherapy drugs can also be introduced directly to the abdominal area using a catheter. About six sessions of chemotherapy and intravenous drug treatment are required, and the patient may feel side effects such as vomiting and abdominal pain. |
