Miscarriage Symptoms

Miscarriage… It is every pregnant woman’s fear and it could indeed be very depressing. Miscarriage is a term for a loss of pregnancy during the first 20 weeks of gestation. Usually, mothers who have had miscarriage blame it on their carelessness or inability to take care of the child while inside their womb; but most often, miscarriage is an event which happens for some sound reasons. Most commonly, a pregnancy which had a pretty bad foundation ends up in miscarriage.

Contrary to common beliefs, miscarriage is not caused by anxiety, stress, too much exercise or even sex. It happens due to the abnormal growth of the zygote in the uterus. In fact, there are many abortions in which etiologies are unknown to the physician. Miscarriage symptoms are relatively easy to identify in which case the woman can immediately ask for medical advice.

• Vaginal spotting/ bleeding- vaginal bleeding can come in various forms- may be light or heavy. Women in their first trimester usually have these normal spotting but when these spotting are accompanied with pain; it is a sign of impending miscarriage.

• Pain- this is one of the determining miscarriage symptoms. Pain usually presents in the lower back, usually dull and radiates to the lower abdomen.

• A sudden gush of clear fluid with or without bleeding or pain is also a sign of miscarriage in which case the amniotic fluid starts to seep from the vagina.

• Blood clots along with vaginal bleeding or spotting may also indicate miscarriage.

Being knowledgeable about these miscarriage symptoms is vital because it can help the woman lessen the risk for complications after the miscarriage. Miscarriage, once induced can never be prevented. It can be treated with D&C (dilatation and curettage). Doctors could also administer drugs which can induce contractions so that the remainders of pregnancy such as the placenta could be expelled.

Having a miscarriage is a psychologically devastating experience most especially to the mother. However, proper information and education that miscarriage is usually an unavoidable case can be a good way for the patient to cope with the grief.
