Menopause symptoms

Menopause literally refers to the termination of the menstrual cycle. Menopause is caused by the faltering or even the complete shutting down of the ovaries. If the ovaries fail to function properly, the reproductive hormones will also halt production.

Without hormones to foster reproductive functions and encourage sexual behavior, the woman’s entire function is affected. Of course this first affects the ability to conceive. However, it affects almost every facet of the woman’s body, from her skin all the way to her bone.

Menopause usually occurs from 45 to 55 years of age. It is also at these times that menopause symptoms are most noticeable. These symptoms include hot and/or cold flashes. These flashes are experienced as sudden sensation of heat and warmth that quickly spreads throughout the body. This situation makes the person’s face and upper body appear reddish. If you experience this, you are not alone. Hot flashes are experienced by 75-85% of American women during their menopausal stage. Night sweats normally come with hot flashes. Night sweats refer to intense perspiration during sleep.

Menopause symptoms also include fluctuations in the menstrual cycle. Before menopause gives way to the total stoppage of menstruation, the woman would first experience irregular periods as well as differences in the heaviness of the bleeding. Another common symptom is vaginal dryness. Because of the absence of the necessary hormones, the vaginal tissues become dry and rigid and this may affect sexual intercourse.

Menopause symptoms can greatly affect your sex life. In some cases, women report that one of the common symptoms is the lack or the decrease in libido or sex drive. This is in part, attributed to the decline of reproductive hormones.

Other symptoms include extreme fatigue, hair loss, memory lapses, lightheadedness, lack of balance, weight gain, and bloating. Menopause can also have psychological symptoms like mood swings, anxiety, irritability, depression and panic.
