Gout symptoms
People with gout have too much uric acid in their bodies. Either they produce too much or have difficulties eliminating it. Consequently uric acid builds up in the body and result to a number of medical conditions; kidney stones, chronic gouty arthritis, and uric acid deposits in the skin. Gout is categorized into primary gout where it appears alone or secondary gout where it appears in combination with other medical conditions.
Gout Arthritis
Most common gout symptoms, especially of acute gouty arthritis are the sudden swelling of joint in the base of the big toe and intense pain. The swollen toe would also be hot and red. The pain is often excruciating that even a slight touch should be avoided. This condition is also called podagra.
Usually acute gouty arthritis will only involve one toe but over time and when not treated immediately other toes may be infected. It could also develop into chronic arthritis.
Other symptoms
Aside from those previously described, other gout symptoms may include the following:
• Sudden discomfort which lasts for a few hours during the night. The discomfort eases for a period of two to seven days.
• Peeling and itchiness around the affected joint.
• Fever
• Affected joint may suffer from limited movement
Gout Symptoms may appear in other forms and the timing maybe different.
• It may initially appear as nodules on the ears, elbows or hands
• Attacks may not follow established patterns
• Symptoms may follow illness or surgery.
• Rather than painful attacks, gout may develop into chronic gout.
• In older persons chronic gout maybe confused with arthritis
Sudden changes in uric acid levels in the body can precipitate gouty arthritis attacks. It is advisable to go slow on red meats and alcohol. Avoid dehydration and some hypertensive medications can uric acid to increase. If you have any of the symptoms of gout the best way to go is to consult a doctor.
