Chlamydia Symptoms

Chlamydia trachomatis is the bacterium that causes Chlamydia which is one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases. The infection is transmitted when an infected person engages in sexual intercourse. Likewise, an infected mother can pass the bacteria to the newborn when the baby passes through the birth canal. In this instance the baby can develop pneumonia or severe eye infection that could result to blindness.

Chlamydia is considered to be a silent but menacing disease because often times, no Chlamydia symptoms would manifest. The disease is left untreated and the infected sexually active person can transmit the infection to other people.

However, 15 to 25% of women infected with the bacterium have these symptoms:

• Spotting or light bleeding after sexual intercourse/ bleeding between menstrual periods
• Smelly, yellowish and mucous-like discharge from the vagina
• Frequent painful urination
• Lower back and abdominal pains that worsens during the menstrual period
• Painful sexual intercourse
• Anal bleeding and discharge
50% of Chlamydia trachomatis infected men have these Chlamydia symptoms:

• Penis discharge
• Burning pain during urination
• Inflammation of the testicles
• Anal discharge
• Slight fever
• Headache
• Muscle and joint pains

Men and women who have these Chlamydia symptoms should seek medical help at once. The doctor will conduct a physical examination and in most cases will order tests to be done. Samples of the penal and vaginal discharge as well as urine will be taken to determine the infection. The doctor may also test the patient for other STD infections as in most cases people infected by Chlamydia bacteria are also infected with gonorrhea and/or trichomonas.

A Chlamydia infection that is left untreated will spread to other people especially if the infected person is sexually active. Moreover, the infection could have serious effects on the reproductive and urethral systems. In women, the infection could result to scarring that would block the fallopian tube thus resulting to infertility. Likewise, the urethra scarring in men could also result to infertility.
