Chlamydia Symptoms Chlamydia trachomatis is the bacterium that causes Chlamydia which is one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases. The infection is transmitted when an infected person engages in sexual intercourse. Likewise, an infected mother can pass the bacteria to the newborn when the baby passes through the birth canal. In this instance the baby can develop pneumonia or severe eye infection that could result to blindness. Chlamydia is considered to be a silent but menacing disease because often times, no Chlamydia symptoms would manifest. The disease is left untreated and the infected sexually active person can transmit the infection to other people. However, 15 to 25% of women infected with the bacterium have these symptoms: • Spotting or light bleeding after sexual intercourse/ bleeding between menstrual periods • Penis discharge A Chlamydia infection that is left untreated will spread to other people especially if the infected person is sexually active. Moreover, the infection could have serious effects on the reproductive and urethral systems. In women, the infection could result to scarring that would block the fallopian tube thus resulting to infertility. Likewise, the urethra scarring in men could also result to infertility. |
