Adhd symptoms

Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder is considered to be one of the most common childhood neurobehavioral disorders. ADHD causes are unknown but the disorder is characterized by persistent level of inattention combined with impulsive hyperactivity that impairs daily functioning.

More than 400 million children ranging from 4 to 17 years of age have been diagnosed with this type of neurobehavioral disorder. This disorder is commonly diagnosed in children but adults may be afflicted too. The symptoms of this disorder are most commonly segregated into three categories- inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity symptoms.

Inattention ADHD symptoms
• Unresponsive when spoken to
• Fails to heed instruction
• Difficulty in staying focused thus refusing to take part in activities that would require mental effort be it doing tasks or play activities
• Makes careless mistakes in school work and other activities because of the failure to pay close attention to details
• Losses things and often forgets daily activities
• Short attention span and often distracted by irrelevant motivation

Hyperactivity ADHD Symptoms

• Squirms and wriggles in seat and often fidgets with hands and feet
• Stands up or leaves the room even when expected and instructed to remain seated
• Extremely restless. Climbs and runs even during inappropriate situations
• Finds it difficult to engage in passive activities
• Talks and prattles excessively
Impulsivity ADHD Symptoms
• Blurts or come out with answers before the question is completed
• Finds it difficult to wait for his/her turn
• Interrupts or intrudes in other people’s conversations
• Can not control themselves
• The hyperactive and impulsive behavior manifest before the age of 7

A number of these symptoms may be present in your children. However, this does not mean the child has neurobehavioral disorder. Parents have to be vigilant as this kind of disorder is gaining grounds. More and more children are afflicted with ADHD.

Some medical practitioners would rationalize that the increase in cases is a result of the parents’ awareness of the symptoms thus, early diagnoses were made. Others would say that the increase in cases is the result of increased levels of toxins. Whatever the case may be, spotting the symptoms would help in treating the disorder while at an early stage.
